When we first arrived in Phomolong, it was sobering to witness how residents had to walk long distances with heavy water containers to reach a central water point. For many families, this was a daily struggle that consumed hours of their time and limited their ability to focus on education, work, and quality of life. As civil engineers, we are often involved in projects within urban areas where service delivery is taken for granted. Working in Phomolong, a previously disadvantaged community, reminded us why the work we do is so vital. This project was not simply about pipes, drains, and roads—it was about restoring dignity, improving health, and creating opportunities for the people living there.
The development encompassed 1,642 stands, with 60% already inhabited and 30% newly allocated. Liber Civils was responsible for providing a full range of civil services, including water reticulation systems, sewer connections, and household sanitation infrastructure. Our work ensured that every stand had direct access to clean running water and reliable sanitation facilities—basic human rights that many of us take for granted. For the families of Phomolong, this meant a significant improvement in daily living conditions, as well as the long-term health and wellbeing of the entire community.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was knowing that families could now turn a tap in their own yards and have immediate access to water. What was once hours of strenuous labour has now been replaced by convenience and safety. The ability to wash vegetables, clean cooking utensils, or maintain household hygiene has been made infinitely easier. This small act—turning on a tap—represents a huge leap forward in quality of life, particularly for women and children who traditionally bear the burden of water collection.
Sanitation provision was another critical element. Installing sewer networks and sanitation connections across 1,642 stands has brought life-changing benefits to residents. Access to reliable sanitation not only reduces the risk of waterborne diseases but also restores a sense of dignity to households.
Over our 23 years in business, Liber Civils has installed hundreds of sanitation systems, yet this project stands out as one of the most meaningful. Much of our work as civil engineers remains invisible—hidden underground in the form of pipelines, drains, and connections—but its impact is felt every single day in the lives of those who now enjoy safer, healthier environments.
Beyond water and sanitation, the project also included road construction and stormwater management infrastructure. A network of gravel roads were developed to enable transport and service accessibility. These roads were also fitted with stormwater drainage systems designed to protect the community during the rainy season.
This aspect of civil engineering is often overlooked, but it is crucial for community safety. Poor stormwater management can lead to flooding, erosion, and unsafe living conditions. With recent flooding devastating parts of the Eastern Cape, the Liber Civils team is proud to have provided Phomolong with infrastructure that will help mitigate such risks and protect residents for years to come.
The Liber Civils water, sanitation, gravel road development and storm water systems at the Phomolong project has been completed and demonstrates the transformative power of civil engineering. By combining water supply systems, sewer networks, road development, and stormwater drainage, we were able to deliver an integrated solution that will serve the community for generations. This project has not only improved health and safety but has also enhanced opportunities for social and economic growth. Reliable infrastructure provides the foundation upon which communities can build schools, businesses, and a brighter future.

The Phomolong Extensions 5 and 6 project, has given us the privilege of contributing to meaningful change.
